Cattle have a dual role to play in any ranching operation: to efficiently convert grass into beef and to improve the land on which they run. 
This was the beginning of a long road of private research and observation in order to find many answers that have eluded ranchers for a long time. It became clear that one could not study or manage the "parts" (cattle and veld) separately as is currently practiced. 
The results in terms of the ecosystem were phenomenal. Composition of palatable/semi-palatable grasses increased, legumes exploded in subsequent years and plant density increased together with vigour. The precursors to all these positive changes were time-controlled soil surface disturbance and non-selective defoliation.
